110 Finest NGCs

The 110 Finest NGCs is an ongoing observation project that had been completed a decade ago.  Still I like to go back and check them out from time to time, and I plan to post images of my efforts for all of them on this BLOG.

You, can use the information I have posted here to help identify these objects when you are on a similar quest.  The important thing to consider is that what will be represented here is more in alignment with what you will see if you are using a smaller telescope or instrument as opposed to the sometimes excellent images you might fine when searching online, where more often than naught you are overwhelmed with details in the images.  Often one is disappointed with the live optical image as the details shown in the pictures sometimes has to be coaxed out by patient and careful observation.  Often a larger aperture and a longer exposure time when taking pictures helps.

The idea of a list of the 110 Finest NGC objects was circulated/published in the early 1990's and it has become a popular pursuit by Amateurs' who are looking for a project beyond the Messier List.  The challenge that is faced by observers, that required patience and dedication is demanding, but the feeling of accomplishment when it's done is rewarding.

This list was compiled by Alan Dyer and was published in Astronomy Magazine.  It is also promoted by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada for an Observing Certificate.
