The main galaxy M31, also known as NGC 224/226 and originally the Andromeda Nebula, is a barred spiral galaxy with diameter of about 220,000 ly approximately 2.5 million light-years from Earth and the nearest large galaxy to the Milky Way.

Our Local Group
The Andromeda Galaxy is one of the other Major Brightest Galaxies in our local group. On a dark night with no light pollution, it can been seen without Optical Assistance.
